This moment…a split second and time where all the stars aline. Camera on the tripod. Self timer set. Hair and clothes just right. Faces bright with smiles. Sigh.  It was one moment in this very chaotic season of parenthood.  A season filled with endless requests from tiny people. A season where you laugh from the…

So I found a new mascara that I love.  Have you heard of Younique’s 3d Fiber Mascara?  My friend Bree introduced me to it and it’s definitely a must have for any photo session. You can check out her products here.  Bree and I have put our heads together to give my clients a little…

What are you dreaming of? I’ve found myself on kayak.com, priceline.com, delta.com, and other various travel-related websites lately. So, yes, you guessed it–I’ve been dreaming of the beach. But for now, photos and memories will have to suffice. Lake Ethel, and Ethel Beach Resort, is a beautiful little spot in Battle Lake Minnesota, near Ottertail….

A night in watching a movie on our projector (takes up a whole wall) with homemade shakes and homemade popcorn 🙂

  • mosaic photographyJuly 26, 2013 - 2:41 am

win a free couples session…just tell us your most awesome date night! (scott and I will be taking notes 🙂 ).

  • Christy BitzJuly 26, 2013 - 9:51 pm

We don’t venture too far from home often…so we have done a picnic in our pasture with a blanket and candles! The cows LOVE it! lol

  • Alyssa FlatenJuly 27, 2013 - 1:08 pm

Any lovebirds out there? I am looking to photograph some date night adventures like hot air ballooning, sunset at the amusement park, a beach picnic-you name it! Leave your idea here on the blog!

  • Tara BultemaJuly 27, 2013 - 2:04 pm

There are so many fun date night ideas but one that I think that would be really neat to photograph would be building climbing. Jon’s Sister Chrissy and her husband used to climb buildings on dates…hey it’s free. Luckily they didn’t get arrested :)…Other fun date night (good photo ops)…Firework watching, ice skating, playing ping pong, Tubing/Water skiing, sledding, ice fishing, wine tasting tour, hiking, going to the races, going to a costume party, shoe shopping, slip and sliding, going to a dinner/mystery theatre, picking out a new pet, car shopping…I think you could make almost any date romantic when no kids are around :).

  • Kim Mack VoorheesJuly 27, 2013 - 3:55 pm

I’ve always wanted to do a hot air balloon ride! You could also have a picnic in a secluded area, tell each other all the things that attracted you to the other person then/now and dance to your “first dance” song (played on iPod, car stereo, etc). Another idea would be to rent/charter a boat and pack food for a picnic on the river. OR, you could split the cost with another couple and do a private sunset yacht cruise in Cabo (http://www.cabosailing.com/tours/sunset-sailing/) ;).

  • Nichole MoserJuly 28, 2013 - 11:48 am

Finding an open area, starting a little campfire wrapping up in a blanket roasting marshmallows & hot dogs maybe a bottle of wine and just enjoying eachothers company 🙂

  • Alyssa FlatenJuly 28, 2013 - 4:32 pm

Loving the date night ideas! Join in the fun and win a couples session on your next date night!

  • Katie HollemanJuly 29, 2013 - 10:44 am

This past summer, my boyfriend has introduced me to a hobby we both love doing together…fishing! Our perfect date night would be having a picnic on the pontoon while fishing the day away. (:

  • Stacy WalchJuly 29, 2013 - 3:30 pm

We would love to go on a hot air balloon ride to also celebrate our 10 yr anniversary!

  • Emily BrooksJuly 29, 2013 - 3:31 pm

My husband and I celebrated our 10 Year Anniversary on May 17th with a vow renewal with the same time, church, pastor, dress and candles as our wedding 10 years earlier. We’ve been stretching out the celebration and doing special things all year. I’ve always wanted to ride on a segway, so this year we’re doing it on Friday the 13th of September! We’d love for you to join us in the Twin Cities :.) http://www.segwayofminnesota.com/.

  • Aarie AdamsJuly 29, 2013 - 3:33 pm

A day at the lake. Rent some paddle boards, fish, jet ski, wake board, ski, or just last on a floatie!! Gotta love the lake!

  • Julie ConnorsJuly 29, 2013 - 5:26 pm

If there were ANY rock climbing around that’s what Kev and I would be doing on a date night, no doubt about it. In the winter…SNOWBOARDING! But right now, we’d love to find some really good horseback riding. 🙂

  • Ashley TrangsrudJuly 29, 2013 - 7:44 pm

A fun date idea would be canoeing down a river with my husband and enjoying a wonderfully put together picnic lunch either in the canoe or stopping somewhere along the river to enjoy our lunch.

  • Judy FlatenJuly 29, 2013 - 10:19 pm

Go to the Sky View Drive In Movie with a bucket of homemade popcorn and a vehicle without bucket seats! WooHOO!

  • Alyssa FlatenJuly 30, 2013 - 1:01 am

From segways to canoeing, I am loving these date ideas!! Join the fun and win a chance to get your date photographed!!

  • Sara J. SchumacherJuly 30, 2013 - 11:09 am

The perfect date night.. doing something he loves then something that she loves and ending with something u both love. For my man and I it would be going to a a place on his bucket list, such as a Notre Dame Football Game VIP style. After the game going to a great restaurant for wine and supper. Then ending our night in the beautiful hotel room with a Jacuzzi tub snuggle and a great bottle of champagne. Total “day of love” celebration !

  • Carissa HaugenJuly 30, 2013 - 11:24 pm

    Here are 3 ideas:

Take a camera with you on your date. Keep on asking people to take your photo and make it a point to lock lips every time the camera clicks. On your next date, after getting the pictures developed, make a collage of your smooching day.

Volunteer at a soup kitchen, homeless shelter, or nursing home. The experience of helping others will unite you and make you appreciate one another.

Go to the Renaissance Faire in Shakopee, MN. Enjoy the jugglers, jousts, tankards of ale, and turkey legs the size of your thigh. Dress up in garb to feel brought back into the Medieval time. Challenge each other to talk in fake British accents the whole day.

  • Amy FranzJuly 31, 2013 - 4:56 am

Something fun I want to do is take my husband out for burgers/root beers, laser tag and finish with a dessert date at a local restaurant. We recently celebrated our first wedding anniversary, as well as a pregnancy, sold our ‘too small’ home and moved into our new home, so we haven’t yet had time to relax and go out!

I would go eat at the walrus, then go to the zoo, then a play at the sleepy hollow theater, then some frozen yogurt at cherry berry, then maybe find a dark field to look at the stars

  • Eve Lynae KosteleckyAugust 1, 2013 - 2:24 am

Something that I think would be a blast and spontaneous is first drop the kids off at my parents-roadtrip it to South Dakota-go for a long hike-eat a steak in Hill City at the Alpine Inn-camp out at the KOA(they have real bathrooms) than eat sunflower seeds the whole way home as we solve the worlds problems:) hehe

LAST day to share your date idea and enter to win your date night paparazzi and photo goodness!

  • Jeremy WalthAugust 2, 2013 - 12:00 am

Sunset plane ride over Bis! Maybe dinner on riverboat prior to that?

  • LauraAugust 3, 2013 - 6:42 pm

Hiking through Maplewood during the display of fall leaves! Ending with a bonfire and roasting marshmallows. Of course we’d have to wear plaid! 😉

  • Alyssa FlatenAugust 3, 2013 - 9:42 pm

my blog got hacked so my site was down most of yesterday but is now up and running! which means I am going to extend the Date Night Photo Session Contest thru TOINGHT and the winners will be announced tomorrow. Last chance to join the fun: http://mosaicphotography.net/blog/?p=3113.

  • Bobbi SimmonsAugust 3, 2013 - 10:27 pm

    Laser tag, target shooting

  • Lexie ThorsonAugust 3, 2013 - 10:47 pm

Pack a picnic, rent a tandem bike and bike to the nearest body of water. Enjoy each others company while marveling at the beauties of outdoors. Would be even more special if you could watch the sunset and then star gaze after!

  • Alisha Nicole BaileyAugust 4, 2013 - 3:12 am

I think if its a date night like, “Quick, let’s get a sitter so we can squeeze some ‘us time’ in”, and if I’m in charge of the planning, then it must consist of 3 components. 1. Food & Drinks. We gotta please our taste buds and connect without scrambling to stop kids from publicly embarrassing us or being interrupted 100 times, and just enjoy each other. The best talks always flow over good Eats. So whether this be a separate stop or in combination with the next components, a fantastic picnic with some good tunes, or a hip & fun pub, grubbing is key to a great night. 2. Competition. Matching wits is spicy and FUN and is sure to induce flirting, bantering, and attraction. The shooting range, miniature golf, or even a classic game of H-O-R-S-E. This is usually the best part of the date and totally capitalizes the Friendship of the relationship. Just getting to be playful and chuck the titles and roles we normally play and just PLAY! 3. Romance. I love knowing he purposely pre-thought about how to include this in our night. But, I get giddy when I plan this phase for us too. A top ranker would be grabbing a blanket, popcorn, wine, and a portable dvd player and driving to the middle of no where, (within 20 minutes of coarse), and setting up under the stars.
Thanks for asking. Such a great topic.

Here it is! Here’s the big news.  30 days until my 10 year wedding anniversary.  13 years of wedding and family photography.  And we need YOU to help Scott and I celebrate! You can leave your super fun date idea here: http://mosaicphotography.net/blog/?p=3113   You can post your comment to enter this contest and join in…

Mitch’s family plays a fun game at the mall on Christmas Eve every year. Each person in the family draws a name and sometimes a store name. Then we each get $20 and 20 min to go into a store in the mall and get a gift for the person whose name they draw. This could be really fun with just the two of you and also drawing a store that you have to go into.

Debt. Have you ever noticed there are four letters in the word “debt?” In our home, “debt” is a four letter word. If you don’t have the cash, no can do. That’s our rule. Yes, we are followers of Dave Ramsey. His book “Total Money Make-Over” re-directed the course of our lives seven years ago….

Dave Ramsey has some decent principles but he is not hitting the mark on all accounts. Purchasing with cash is not the best option either. Think about it, you buy with cash and that cash is gone forever and you lost the opportunity to ever use it again. Dave does not look at lost opportunity cost, its about leveraging your money. I am NOT talking about investments. Dave is awesome for getting people on track but once there you need to think about money differently. The way we have never been taught because we then are forced to rely on banks.
    My two cents…:)

It’s been one of those days…you know, the kind where all you have the strength to mutter is ‘help me Lord.’ My sweet little sugar pies often drive me either to my wits end or to dependence on my Father. I am a word-picture, visual kinda gal, which is probably not a surprise to most…

Beautiful post, Alyssa! I love your metaphor of grace is like water…

Today is day 8 of someone in my family being sick. So as I sit here here with my little darlings crawling all over me, weary and worn out, my mind is sorting through the truths I was reminded of this last weekend at a women’s event I attended. I must remain steadfast in the…

One luxury I enjoyed while I was away from my girls several weeks ago was READING! I read more that week than I had in probably a whole year! I know I have mentioned these books before, but I was so refreshed, rejuvenated, and encouraged, by Gary Ezzo and Robert Bucknam’s book “On Becoming Childwise”…

I HAVE BEEN SO ENCOURAGED as I HAVE BEEN READING THIS BOOK!

It is far too easy to forget to set aside time away from the kids, your husband, and just have girl time! I AM HUGELY GUILTY OF THIS! I don’t think I went for coffee more than twice the first year of being a Mom. In today’s busy culture, the fun stuff is sometimes the…

One Word. What one word would you choose to define your year? This is something we talked about in the last PhotoHour class on Aperture. I am so excited to see what my students come up with. But for now, I will share my one word. I waffled. The past couple of years have been…

So it’s time for me to face the music and dance. My Elliana is one and I practically weigh the same as just moments after her birth. Sigh. So how am I fixing this? Well I am attending a super awesome FREE, kick-your-butt exercise class at the Element here in Bismarck. And I am training…

anyone had weird results when using the Nike+ app indoors? the past few days were weird…i swear I went farther than what my app said.

So, I was flipping through a magazine (which I seldom do) a few months ago and saw an ad for the SVVING and I was mesmerized. I knew my two year old would FREAK out if she had an indoor swing. And I was thinking that a swing might give me a bit of relief…

Mira is starting to get the whole “pumping” thing–making the swing go all by herself. So this is becoming more awesome!

Some of you may know that the year before my first daughter was born my husband, Scott, and I started a new branch of Mosaic Photography, which we affectionately called “Little Beast Photography.” Little Beast was born out of our love for our little Fergie Beast and man, am I glad we photographed that little…

Well, here I am. Moving again. So I am going off the grid for a couple weeks. Please be patient. I am more organized than ever, but with the holidays and some family birthdays coming up, my focus is going to be getting settled and celebrating my youngest’s first birthday. Chao!
